2016 South Island Masters

4 & 5 June, Lake Hood

Union at South Islands

It’s been four years since Union last raced at a South Islands regatta at Lake Hood and that event saw racing cancelled mid morning on day 2. Add in the blown out South Islands two years ago at Dunstan Arm, and the weather gods clearly owed us a good one. Ashburton duly delivered up two great days, with Saturday being perfect and a light wind from mid morning on Sunday.

Union had a very successful regatta winning 10 golds and best club overall, as well as the trophies for the fastest long distance eight and the fastest women’s double. We also fielded the fastest woman’s quad by some considerable margin. We took a team of nearly 30 competitors to Ashburton and nearly all our boats, which was a logistical challenge but well worth the effort. All of the team, across all the age groups we were competing in, put in good performances, especially so our novices, some of whom had never raced 1000m before.

The event was very well organised on the whole, even if some of our coxed crews were disadvantaged by going up against crews which turned up in straight boats. The social event on Sunday night was a real treat, thanks to a great band and plenty of party spirit, and yes, some of us were the last to leave.

Our heartfelt thanks go Jim, for the many hours he put into all the teams in the weeks and months prior to the regatta, and also to our coxswains Dorothy, Maddie, Peter and Kim, for putting up with us and the cold temperatures.
