2017 NZ Masters Championships, Lake Ruataniwha

16 & 17 September, Lake Ruataniwha

When 33 rowers headed north for the World Masters Games in April 2017, it could have been expected that there might have been far fewer committing to keeping up the training for Nationals five months later. Union was by far the largest club represented at Nationals with 33 rowers going to Ruataniwha in September, including many of our novices. That says plenty about the enthusiasm at Union to keep competing. Once again, the squad benefitted hugely from Jim Little's on and off the water training programme.

The results were equally impressive with 15 golds, 21 silvers and 7 bronzes in fully Union-crewed boats, with many more medals achieved in composite crews. The result for URC crews was enough to make us clear winners of the trophy for the club which was the overall aggregate points for top three placings at Masters Nationals. This impressive trophy was donated this year by Union to mark its 2014 sesquicentennial [150th] celebrations, as the second oldest rowing club in New Zealand.

Stand out results came from Kirsty Mahoney and Greg McLaughlin who continued where they left off at Worlds. As well as both gaining gold in many crewed boats - Greg's golds with ex-URC rower Simon Smith in the men's A, B and C doubles deserve recognition - Kirsty matched that triple with her three firsts in the women's A, B and C singles.
